Cambridge United suffered relegation from League One in 2024/25 in part due to their struggles in front of goal. Reports are now circulating that the club are eager to improve its options in attack as they have had two bids rejected for a League Two forward.
The U’s scored just 45 goals in their 46 outings in the third tier last season, with none of their playing squad managing more than seven league strikes. They begin their League Two campaign with a home match against Cheltenham Town.
Cambridge United Relegated Due to Lack of Firepower
There were several reasons for the U’s relegation in 2024/25, but their attacking metrics are a key indicator of their struggles. A record of 50 big chances missed of 72 created highlights their struggles in front of goal, with loanee Dom Ballard, who has returned to Southampton, the biggest culprit, missing 12 opportunities in his 17 appearances.
No player could average a tally of 1.0 shots on target per game with Cambridge United ranking 20th in that metric in League One last season.
Elias Kachunga and Josh Stokes topped the scoring charts with seven apiece. The latter has now returned to Championship side Bristol City, further weakening manager Neil Harris’s options in attacking areas. Louis Appéré has been drafted in, but the forward failed to score in League One with Stevenage last season.
The club have now finally moved for a player who has been a regular scorer at EFL level for multiple campaigns.
Bids Rejected For Top Scorer
Cheltenham Town make the trip to Cambridge United this weekend, and the fixture is sure to have added spice as Gloucestershire Live are reporting that the U’s have had two bids rejected for last season’s top scorer George Miller.
The 26-year-old scored 11 goals in all competitions after joining from Doncaster Rovers last summer. Miller has found the net on 51 occasions in 219 appearances across his time in League One and Two and has established himself as a reliable goalscorer in the third and fourth tiers.
The centre-forward would slot straight into the Cambridge United starting eleven as the only addition to the forward line has been the aforementioned Appéré. A fully-fit Shayne Lavery would be a welcome boost to the U’s, however, the talented Northern Ireland international can operate in any of the roles behind the main man in attack.
If Miller were to sign, having the 26-year-old in addition to Kachunga, Lavery, and the new signing Appéré would see them far better equipped for a promotion-chasing campaign.
