Newcastle United are reportedly expected to submit a bid for FC Porto and Spain forward Samu Aghehowa.
The Magpies are set for their second Champions League campaign in three seasons after finishing fifth in the Premier League.
Eddie Howe’s side seem to be strengthening for the upcoming season, bringing in the likes of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton and AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, as well as closing in on Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey.
However, Newcastle could face a huge setback in their preparations for the upcoming campaign with star forward Alexander Isak reportedly pushing for a move away from St James’ Park.
It seems now the Magies are looking to strengthen their attack, and are expected to submit a bid for FC Porto star Samu Aghehowa as they look to bring in a striker.
The 21-year-old has started the 2025/2026 season strongly, scoring twice against Vitoria in the first match of the Liga Portugal campaign.
Newcastle ready move for Aghehowa
According to Football Insider, Newcastle are expected to submit a bid for Aghehowa as they look to sign a striker.
Porto are reportedly braced for a move for the 21-year-old and fear the forward could leave before the end of the transfer window.
Aghehowa is not the only striker the Magpies are interested in, with Football Insider also reporting that Howe’s side are in the race for Chelsea’s Nicholas Jackson.
Newcastle face competition for the Senegalese with Aston Villa and European giants Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Juventus also interested.
How did Aghehowa fare last season?
Aghehowa was one of Porto’s star players last season as the Portuguese side qualified for the Europa League.
The Spain international played a crucial role in the Liga Portugal last campaign. The 21-year-old was Porto’s top scorer in the division, scoring 19 and assisting a further three in 30 appearances.
Aghehowa struggled to make an impact in Portuguese cup competitions, playing only three times, making no goal contributions in the Allianz Cup or the Taca De Portugal.
The forward played a crucial role in the Europa League, scoring six times in nine appearances as Porto reached the qualification play-offs.
Aghehowa also made a few appearances in the FIFA Club World Cup. The 21-year-old scored twice in three matches for Porto as they were knocked out in the group stages.
Overall, Aghehowa was one of Porto’s star players last season, playing 45 times, scoring 27 goals and assisting a further three as the Portuguese side qualified for the Europa League.
Would this be a good signing for Newcastle?
It was a historic campaign for Newcastle as they won their first major trophy since 1955, winning the EFL Cup. The Magpies also qualified for the Champions League after their fifth-place finish in the Premier League.
It seems Howe’s side are now preparing for the upcoming campaign, signing the likes of Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale and Malick Thiaw, as well as closing in on Jacob Ramsey. But, they may need to strengthen their attack due to the Alexander Isak transfer situation.
One striker who could come in and help strengthen their attack is Samu Aghehowa.
In the league last season, Aghehowa scored 19 goals, averaging 0.76 goals per90, showing his ability to score goals and pose a threat in attack.
At 21 years old, the Spain international could be a long-term option as well as someone who can make an impact for the Magpies now.
If Isak does leave Newcastle this window, it could be seen as a near-impossible task to replace him, but Aghehowa may be one of the better options out there.
If the Swedish international does stay at the Magpies, then Eddie Howe would have two great strikers to either use together or rotate to save fitness across multiple competitions.
This could be a very good signing for Newcastle as it could fit plans for if Isak stays or goes, and at 21, Aghehowa could be a long-term option for Eddie Howe’s side.
