League One club Peterborough United is reportedly preparing a bid for Accrington Stanley star Ben Woods.
The 22-year-old’s performances certainly caught the attention last season, despite Stanley’s struggles in EFL League Two.
Having begun their campaign with a 2-1 defeat away to Cardiff City, Darren Ferguson’s men are seeking to bolster their midfield options with the aim of launching a promotion bid.
According to Alan Nixon, the Cambridgeshire-based club rates Woods very highly and is ready to make a decisive move to sign him.
Peterborough United Seeking to Fill the Void Left by Departures
Posh have set their sights on another successful season after winning their second successive EFL Trophy at Wembley last term.
Despite a largely positive year, high-profile departures of their key players have left them in desperate need of reinforcements.
The exits of Malik Mothersille and Kwame Poku to Stockport and Queens Park Rangers, respectively, saw them lose their two leading scorers and assist makers from last season.
The duo each managed 12 goals in League One as they helped Peterborough to secure an eighteenth-place finish.
The likes of Tayo Edun and Jack Sparkes have also headed for pastures new.
However, they have sent out a clear statement of intent by acting quickly to replace them. Having recently acquired David Okagbue and Klaidi Lolos, Accrington’s versatile midfield man is their latest transfer target.
How has Woods fared so far?
Ben Woods joined Accrington Stanley in 2023 following a short spell north of the border with Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
He has since gone on to make 71 appearances in Lancashire, becoming a permanent fixture in John Doolan’s starting lineup.
The former Manchester United Academy player was a rare bright spark in a season of relative struggle for Stanley.
He finished as the club’s joint leading scorer with nine goals, strikes that proved crucial in ensuring League Two safety. He also registered six assists for The Reds last term.
Accrington Stanley Braced for Woods’ Approach
Having come through the EFL Cup preliminary round after a victory over Oldham Athletic, Accrington have been drawn to host Peterborough in the first round.
As the match draws closer, the possibility of an approach for last season’s Supporters’ Trust Player of the Season is looming large.
Woods played the entire match of the League Two opener against Gillingham, but wasn’t involved at all in the EFL Cup win in midweek.
As they attempt to improve on last season’s 21st-place finish, impending interest in their talisman from Peterborough threatens to disrupt their encouraging start to the season.
