Championship club Queens Park Rangers have reportedly agreed a fee with Wycombe Wanderers for their in-demand striker Richard Kone.
The latest development surrounding Kone’s future could conclude one of the summer’s longest running transfer sagas.
The 22-year-old has been at the centre of intense interest from various Championship clubs, including Leicester City and Swansea City.
According to Pete O’Rourke, QPR have won the hard-fought race to sign the Ivorian forward.
Queens Park Rangers to Strengthen Forward Line
The seemingly imminent addition of Richard Kone is a significant coup for Julien Stephan as he begins his first season in charge at Loftus Road.
There has been a particular emphasis on bolstering the Frenchman’s attacking options, highlighted by the lengthy pursuit of Kone.
With last season’s top scorer, Michael Frey, currently unavailable due to injury, Stephan is determined to make a strong start to the season.
Already in this window, they have signed Rumarn Burrell from Burton Albion. He replaced Slovenian international Zan Celar in the second half of their season opener at home to Preston.
The fanfare around Richard Kone has been substantial, especially considering last season’s prolific campaign was his first as a fully fledged professional.
Wycombe Wanderers Face Losing Their Talisman
The ChairBoys were undoubtedly anticipating high demand this summer for their 18-goal man from last season. However, they may have been surprised by the sheer number of EFL clubs lodging concrete offers for his services.
They rejected a fee in the region of £3m from Preston North End at the end of July, sending out a clear message to the rest of Kone’s admirers.
Rangers are likely to pay a similar initial transfer fee to the one that the Lilywhites saw rebuffed, but with the inclusion of add-ons. Sky Sports’ Ron Walker revealed that Wycombe may have to settle for this due to Kone entering the final year of his contract.
Kone’s goals and eye-catching performances were a key factor in Mike Dodd’s side securing a play-off berth last season.
Having featured 41 times in the league for the Buckinghamshire outfit, it appears they must now prepare for life after the Ivorian.
It’s been a difficult start to the campaign for Wanderers, having lost both of their matches so far in League One.
QPR Continue League One Raid
The West London club’s transfer strategy appears to have been based on luring players who shone in League One last season to Loftus Road.
The prior arrivals of the aforementioned Burrell, as well as Kwame Poku and Amadou Mbengue, have triggered major excitement in the QPR fan base. The trio of new arrivals all share a similar level of potential to make the step up from League One with Kone seamlessly.
Under a new head coach, QPR are looking to improve on last season’s fifteenth-place finish. With an injection of confident and attack-minded recruits, the Rangers’ faithful will be hoping their side can challenge higher up the EFL Championship table.
