Bolton Wanderers go in search of their first points of the new campaign this weekend, and they may have to make do without one of their star players from last season, as several clubs are reportedly chasing the signature of defender George Johnston.
The 26-year-old has spent the last five years with the Trotters, accumulating almost 150 appearances. Johnston was one of the team’s star performers in 2024/25 and captained the side on a handful of occasions; however, he was an unused substitute on the opening weekend defeat to Stockport County.
Johnston Stars For Bolton Wanderers
It turned out to be a disappointing campaign for Bolton Wanderers despite signs of promise in late September and into October that they could compete for promotion. The club had secured back-to-back play-off finishes in prior campaigns.
Former under-21 Scotland international Johnston was undoubtedly the standout player. He ranked first at the club for accurate passes per game, with a completion rate of over 80%. His passing range includes being able to pick out teammates from distance, as he ranked in second place for accurate long passes per match.
Defensively, the former Liverpool academy player excelled as he topped the club’s charts comfortably for total interceptions and clearances. His impressive displays have attracted interest from clubs in the second tier, and a move could be a possibility as the player has entered the final year of his current deal.
Trio Considering Move For Defender
Johnston may be weighing up his options, as the defender has yet to play at a higher level than League One in his career, despite impressing in the third tier for several campaigns. His contract expiring next summer provides an opportunity for the player and his current club.
Bolton Wanderers may be able to cash in on the 26-year-old as Football Insider is reporting that Championship sides Preston North End and Queens Park Rangers are weighing up a move for the central defender. League One rivals Wycombe Wanderers have also been credited with an interest.
Captain Eoin Toal and Chris Forino started against Stockport County. Steven Schumacher also has Richard Taylor and Will Forrester in reserve, highlighting enough depth in central defence to allow Johnston to leave should a suitable offer come in.
