Wrexham’s impressive summer transfer window looks set to continue as they target a Premier League defender.

The Welsh side made their return to the second-tier with a narrow 2-1 defeat away at recently relegated Premier League side, Southampton.

In that opening game, we saw several of their new signings make their competitive debut. Josh Windass, Danny Ward, Ryan Hardie, and Conor Coady were amongst numerous players to make their debut for the club.

With the transfer window still open and Wrexham clearly keen to continue improving their side, the club have been linked with another impressive signing.

Wrexham Want Chris Mepham

The Wrexham Insider shared that Wrexham could make a move for Premier League and Wales defender Chris Mepham.

Graeme Bailey confirmed for the website that:

“A deal for Mepham would be very expensive and tough to do, but it’s not impossible.”

This comes as Phil Parkinson’s side also eye a move for Sheffield United defender, Jack Robinson. The same outlet confirmed that a move for Robinson would be unwise to rule out.

Mepham an Impressive Signing

Most of the transfers by the Red Dragons this summer have been eye-catching, and signing Mepham would be another one.

The defender spent last season on loan at Sunderland, helping them achieve promotion to the Premier League.

Mepham played in 38 Championship games, starting 37 games and averaging 86 minutes per game. His performances received a Sofascore average rating of 7.07 – the fourth highest in the Sunderland squad.

Defensively, Mepham was impressive last season. He had 0.9 interceptions per game, 1.4 tackles per game, 3.6 balls recovered per game, and 6.1 clearances per game. Mepham also only committed two errors, leading to a goal.

The defender has also featured for the Wales national side this year. He played and started both of Wales’ World Cup Qualifiers in March and received an average rating of 7.15 from Sofascore.

How Likely is a Deal?

As highlighted by Bailey, a deal is likely to cost Wrexham a fair bit. However, this might not be an issue for the Welsh side.

They’ve already broken their record transfer fee this summer with the signing of Lewis O’Brien. They were also rumoured to be close to a deal for Ipswich Town forward, Nathan Broadhead, which was expected to set them back around £7.5 million. However, that deal is on hold

If they’re willing to put their hands in their pockets to compete for promotion once again, maybe a deal for Mepham isn’t out of the question.
